2018 STUDY PROGRAM
Tiffin Lectures and the Spiritual Training of the Mandali:
Meher Baba's Early Working with His Inner Circle of Close Male Disciples
Just released in 2017 after twenty years of editorial preparation, Tiffin Lectures occupies a unique position in the literature of this Avataric advent. Unlike Discourses, God Speaks, and other books of Baba’s authorship, which were composed by Him with the greater humanity in prospect as their audience, these early talks from 1926 and 1927 were addressed and intended specifically as part of the spiritual education of His earlier men disciples. Recorded in note form by Framroze Dadachanji, Meher Baba’s secretary and close disciple, and compiled and edited under the auspices of the Avatar Meher Baba Trust, Tiffin Lectures gives us today the opportunity to become “flies on the wall” in early Meherabad, sitting in on these intimate sessions in one of the foundational phases of the Avatar’s work.
More than any of the previous six Meherana study programs, the 2018 edition devoted itself to close readings of the words of Baba’s talks. The fifty-two talks in Tiffin Lectures, delivered by Baba mostly at Meherabad between 29th April 1926 and 30th August 1927, will very much comprise our focal text. At the same time, following up on our study of Meher Baba’s “darshana” in the 2017 program, we will bring in other messages and discourses from later years when and as they bear on what Baba was explaining to these young men at Meherabad. The new esoteric information that Baba gave on the structure of the Sadguru’s circle, for example, will be related to the discourses on that subject that He gave in the 1940s. Baba’s illuminations on the original significance of some of the central Zoroastrian and Hindu and Muslim rituals, or His warnings about the dangers of fourth plane, or anecdotes illustrating the ways of the Sadguru, will be brought into relation with these topics and Baba discussed them over the decades following.
